What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic comes from the Ancient Greek words ‘kheir’ and ‘praktikos’, loosely translated ‘to do by hand’.

Chiropractic is a recognised healthcare discipline that emphasises the inherent, recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery.

The chiropractic practice is based on the scientific fact that your nervous system runs and controls every cell, tissue, organ, system and function of your body.

Daniel David Palmer

(1845 – 1913)

Chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.

Subluxations or misalignments of anatomical structures (cranium, vertebra and pelvic bones) and the nervous system can cause malfunction of the nerves and organs and may create sickness and disease. Extremities have a fundamental effect on spinal structures and the nervous system and can, therefore, cause or contribute to spinal subluxations.

Modern chiropractic was first discovered in 1895 by a natural healer, Dr Daniel D. Palmer.

Dr Palmer’s janitor, Harvey Lillard, had been deaf for 17 years. When Dr Palmer examined Harvey’s neck and upper back, he found what we now know as a subluxation. Dr Palmer adjusted Harvey’s subluxation and his hearing returned shortly thereafter.
